Hong Nor Cup 2010![]() August 29th 2010 Well were here!, the third annual Hong Nor Cup, hosted for the third consecutive year by the East Shrewsbury Model Car club headed by Bryn Pound and his merry men. The track is a traditional grass track with some man made jumps and there is a near capacity entry of 117 people racing. The Hong Nor Cup race has been a very popular race meeting over the last few years and is aimed for the club/regional/family racer, the emphasis is firmly on having a fun weekend racing and socializing. The Shrewsbury crew always manage to find a venue with a club house for the all important Sunday night Karaoke, which usually causes much amusement ! Anyone seen the Apex?? Sure its here somewhere........ ![]() Heat 1 under way ![]() The early rounds kicked off with a threat of rain, and the threat proved to be a promise, we had quite a heavy shower just to remind the racers they will still in the UK racing ! Fortunately the rain did the decent thing and disappeared to let some close racing take place. the early pace setter in truggy was Joe Joyce, his truggy turning in very sweetly on the bowling green surface, in 1/10th scale truck (a mixture of SCRT10 and CRT.5 nitro's) Stan "the van man" Gill looked quickest with his SCRT10 electric powered short course machine. In the 1/8th buggy class "mr panic" Jon Howells looked strong and early bets were on him to take the 2010 crown. Bryn, Carl and the team once again ran a tight ship, and qualifying ran on time with no issues. After the 5 rounds ran today the qualifying looked like this, Overall Results after Round:5
Tomorrow see's the start of the finals, every entrant getting at least a 20 minute final. 5 bump ups from each final. Promising up and coming youngster Jordan Banks pictured with his LRP S8TX UK Truggy ![]() After qualifying had finished then it was time to socialize, the Hong Nor Cup race is all about enjoying our fun hobby with like minded enthusiasts in a relaxed friendly environment, no stress, no ranting referee's and no rush... The Shrewsbury club always come up trumps with a venue that has camping on site and of course a function room for the now legendary disco/karaoke as usual there were some good and horrendous attempts at singing! The night went on late and this morning (Monday 30th August) there were some pale looking faces and a lot of sunglasses installed ! ![]() With people still in recovery mode from the "night before" the finals got under way at 9.00am sharp, with the top 5 bumping up and the minimum final length of 20 minutes it was all to play for... This Losi car was determined to carry as much pace onto the long straight aiming for the all important bump up's, instead of clipping the Apex this driver decided to nail it into submission! this photo highlights the suspension travel we use on this class of car. ![]() One of the final starts, close fast racing... ![]() A final small truck The small truck final proved to very amusing, our very own Stan Gill was running a Hong nor SCRT10, however with a 20 minute final looming and Stan running electric, a battery change was inevitable. Stan was the quickest car on the track but not by enough to compensate for his slow pit stop (his SCRT 10 stopped out on track when the lipo cut off kicked in) and in the end Stan took 2nd place. Out at the front Chris Bird was very close to Stans pace and with the added advantage of being re fueled, Chris kept his nose relatively clean to take a measured deserved victory, Dave Bird rounded out the top 3. As the buzzer sounded for the start of the Truggy final Riki Karaka got a storming start from second on the grid, Riki has a very impressive smooth, conservative style and he edged out an early lead from top qualifier Joe Joyce. Joe was fast but made too many small errors during the first 15 minutes of the race (some his fault, some back marker) and Riki looked very comfortable out in front. Scott Walker got involved with the fight for second place and was driving in a confident determined manner. The battle raged on for a few minutes between Joe and Scott and all the time Riki was gently edging away.. Around 20 minutes in and Joe suddenly found the pace and consistency he had been showing in qualifying and slowly but surely started to reel in Riki. Coming on the straight with two minutes to go and Joe had the gap down to 4 seconds and was pushing really hard. Going into the last lap Riki was now in the sight of Joe, but in reality Riki was playing the percentage and crossed the line a little "too close for comfort" 2 seconds in front of a very hard charging Joe. Jon built up a commanding lead and was never seriously challenged, Dennis Holding put in another excellent drive to take the runner up spot after bumping up from the B final and in third place was Ian Ford.
